—to Lissue, the goddess of rage
You gasp for breath.
A cement block pins your chest,
crushes your lungs,
breaks your heart.
Your voice hoarse—
the low hiss
of a broken scream.
Your eyes burn.
Tears brim—
held back.
Then, just like that,
you look up
to treetops waving,
to the sky,
spotted blue.
Like whitecaps
racing across the lake,
only to settle
into the shallows
vengeance falters,
and drowns.
