A mournful ceremony hovers
on the grasslands, far from the burnt
sun and restful villages.
The matriarch, a fallen cloud
among a mass of her evaporating
bloodline, rests with ivory tusks
spun into an angel-winged mirage.
The moment grieves her tiny offspring.
The sisterhood follows this new queen
into the brush, where they again emerge
with trunks full of foliage.
The herd, touching the windswept
road of human sympathy, buries
their deceased under ryegrass
and treasured lineage.
